Ingredients & Substitutions

This easy dessert recipe, or breakfast recipe, requires only 4 simple ingredients! Here is the small list you’ll need to grab from the grocery store:

  • Puff Pastry: I personally use store-bought puff pastry sheets that can be found in the freezer aisle of most stores because I myself am not a dough connoisseur. But if you are, feel free to make homemade puff pastry!
  • Nutella: The star of this show is Nutella! I mean … DUH. The chocolate hazelnut spread is seriously what my dreams are made of.
  • Egg: You will need one egg for an egg wash here. This is what will give that flaky pastry it’s golden look! It is simply a beaten egg, nothing fancy.
  • Powdered Sugar: I guess you could say this final ingredient is optional, but I personally think it is vital. It really elevates the look of these homemade pastries! Plus it adds a little extra sweetness. The rich Nutella simply isn’t enough!

How To Make Nutella Puff Pastry

These delicious pastries are actually quite easy to make, despite what their elevated appearance may suggest!

The whole process can be summed up in a few simple steps … spread a thick layer of Nutella, slice and shape the dough, bake until golden brown, and add some sugar snow on top. That’s it!

It is easy and fun to do. A perfect kitchen activity to do with the ones you love! Now here’s exactly what you’ll need to do .

Step 1: Prep. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit.

Step 2: Roll out dough. Once the sheets of puff pastry have thawed place them on a lightly floured surface. Roll out each sheet with a rolling pin into an even size. Be careful not to make the dough too thin, you just want to spread it into a slightly larger rectangle.

Step 3: Add Nutella. Next add the Nutella to one of the sheets of dough. Spread evenly until the entire sheet is covered. Place the other sheet of puff pastry carefully on top. Make sure the sheets line up and the Nutella is covered as best as possible.

Step 4: Slice. Cut the pastry dough into 12 strips, about 1/2 inch thick with a sharp knife or pizza cutter. You will make horizontal slices, going from one of the long edges of the rectangle to the other long edge.

Step 5: Shape Nutella puff pastries. Roll: The roll is the easiest shape to create. Take one strip of pastry and roll it up, going from one end to the other. It will look like a cinnamon roll. Twist: To create puff pastry Nutella twists hold a strip of pastry, one hand on either end. Then gently twirl the dough strip in opposite directions with each hand. Knot: To create the knot shaped pastry you first have to make the twist. Then once the twist is formed, place one end down on a surface. Wrap the rest of the twisted dough around this point. Once the dough is fully wrapped around, tuck the other end underneath the knot.

Step 6: Egg wash. Transfer the pastries to a parchment paper lined baking sheet. Top each pastry with egg wash using a pastry brush.

Step 7: Bake. Place in the preheated oven. Bake for 20-25 minutes.

Step 8: Add powdered sugar. Remove from the pastries from the oven and let cool slightly. Top with a dusting of powdered sugar.

Step 9: Serve and enjoy! The perfect treat for brunch, dessert, and anytime in between.

Recipe Variations

I personally think there is no way to improve this already perfect recipe. Rich and creamy Nutella stuffed inside warm, buttery, and crispy pastry … I mean, come on!?! BUT there is always room for substitutions and additions to make this recipe perfect for you.

  • Nut Butter: You could easily replace the Nutella here with different nut butters, like peanut butter. I don’t think it would be as delicious as the chocolate spread, but it should work!
  • Texture: Feel like these pastries need a little something extra? I suggest chopped nuts, dried fruit, or even chocolate chips.
  • Jam: Adding a bit of raspberry jam to this Nutella recipe would be delicious for a fruity spin.
  • Cinnamon Sugar: If you want to go an entirely different route for the filling here, I think cinnamon sugar would be fabulous. Simply spread some softened butter, brown sugar, and ground cinnamon instead of the Tutella. It would be like a cinnamon roll filling!
  • Savory: I think your best bet here for savory fillings would be butter, garlic, fresh herbs, and cheese. Sort of like garlic bread! You can check out my garlic bread recipes for inspiration.

Tip! I would not recommend adding any sort of fresh fruit to these pastries. Unfortunately, I find that it often creates a juicy, soggy mess. Especially high water content fruit like berries!

Expert Tips

Thaw pastry! Remove the puff pastry from the freezer about 30 minutes before you are ready to work. The worst thing is when you are ready to go but forget to thaw the pastry. This sets you back quite a bit.

Don’t skip the egg wash! Topping these pastries with a beaten egg may seem like an unnecessary step, but it is not. It gives them that gorgeous golden look. I recommend using a pastry brush for this step, but if you don’t have one I find using the back of a spoon works perfectly well.

Bake until fully down! Baking these pastries can be a little tricky. Especially with the knots and roll shaped ones. I find that the innermost section of these shapes can take a while to bake fully. Meaning the outside of the pastry, might look crispy and golden but the inside dough is still a bit raw. I recommend checking on your pastries from the 15-25 minute mark, as every oven may perform slightly different. Uncooked puff pastry will have a slight greenish, blue hue rather than the golden hue that indicates it is ready. You can also always check one pastry to see if they are baked completely!

Serving Suggestions

There really is no bad way to serve or enjoy this fabulous, flaky puff pastry Nutella recipe! Heck you could whip them up for a Tuesday night treat for yourself. I will not judge! I honestly encourage it. These pastries are also wonderful for:

  • Holiday Spreads: This delicious recipe would make for a fabulous addition to a Christmas party or Valentine’s day affair. The snowy powdered sugar look makes them the perfect winter treat and what better way to celebrate the day of love than with chocolate.
  • Brunch: I am a huge fan of breakfast pastries. Like massive!! I think I prefer them to true desserts. Which is a crazy statement, but just might be true. Pair these Nutella twists or rolls with soft boiled eggs or an egg casserole, breakfast sausage, bagels, fruit salad, and more. Ugh, I want to attend this brunch immediately!

Don’t have any event to bring this pastry recipe too? Don’t worry … one is not needed. I find this recipe doubles as a fun activity to do with someone you love or with yourself. It’s perfect for some solo Sunday baking, a fun activity to lift your kids’ noses from the screens, or a romantic date night at home!

Storing Suggestions

You can store leftover Nutella and puff pastry treats in an airtight container at room temperature. They will keep best for 3-5 days.

They can be enjoyed cold or reheated. My favorite way to warm them up is in the microwave! Just pop them in for abut 15-30 seconds.

FAQs

Do I have to use Nutella?

No, you do not have to use Nutella. You can use any other chocolate hazelnut spread on the market. Or just a chocolate spread.

If you want to skip the Nutella all together, check out my Recipe Variations section above for alternate filling ideas.

What is puff pastry?

Puff pastry, also known as pâte feuilletée, is a light and flaky pastry made from laminated dough.

“Laminating” is the process of rolling and folding the dough over and over until hundreds of layers are formed. It is typically a very time consuming and difficult endeavor!

Puff pastry has both sweet and savory uses. It can be used in recipes for turnovers, palmiers, beef wellington, pinwheels, tarts, and more.

I love to use puff pastry in my Baked Brie Bites and Goat Cheese Appetizer.

Can I use homemade puff pastry?

Absolutely! I would imagine that this easy recipe could only be improved by using a homemade dough rather than a store bought option.
