What are Viral Feta Eggs?

Feta fried eggs are actually pretty self explanatory. They are exactly what they sound like they are! Isn’t it great when that happens? They are eggs that are fried in a circle of crumbled feta cheese … resulting in golden crispy cheese edges, fully cooked whites, and a runny egg yolk. Truly divine!!

Now for the viral part of the equation! If you are a user of the internet at all, especially TikTok, you know that certain foods, food combinations, and recipes sometimes blow up. It typically begins with one food creator sharing something unique and then thousands of people follow in their footsteps. Re-creating and sharing it themselves!

It happened with Jennifer Aniston’s Famous Quinoa Salad, Low Carb Cottage Cheese Pizza Bowls, and Chocolate Covered Strawberry Yogurt Clusters. It has also happened with these salty, savory, crispy fried eggs!

Ingredients & Substitutions

5-minute feta cheese crispy eggs require only two main ingredients! Feta cheese and eggs. Then you’ll need a carb to serve with and toppings for extra flavor.

  • Feta: For the best results I recommend buying a block of feta cheese from the grocery store and crumbling it yourself. It will melt and crisp up the best! However, pre-crumbled feta is perfectly acceptable.
  • Eggs: You’ll also need some classic large eggs. I always look for eggs that are organic, pasture-raised, and USDA grade A or AA. 
  • Tortilla: The tortilla isn’t absolutely mandatory for these fried eggs, but I do think it is a fabulous option. A small tortilla works best for each individual egg!
  • Avocado: I love to add a smear of fresh avocado to the tortillas too. The creamy texture and subtle flavor pairs wonderfully with the salty cheese.
  • Toppings: I keep things simple with salt, black pepper, and fresh chives. However, you can go as crazy you would like. Check out my Recipe Variations & Topping Ideas section below for all my ideas.

How To Make This Feta Fried Egg Recipe

This viral recipe is pretty simple to make … it will just take a little bit of effort to truly perfect! Nailing down that wonderfully cheesy crust on an egg cooked to your liking, without burning it is a bit of a learning curve.

However if you follow these steps and use my tips, found below in the Expert Tips section, you should be a pro in no time.

Step 1: Melt feta cheese. First heat a non-stick pan over medium heat. Add cooking spray, or a bit of olive oil. Once the pan is hot, add the crumbled feta cheese. Arrange the cheese into a circle with a hole in the middle for the egg.

Step 2: Add egg. Once the melted feta starts to bubble, crack an egg into the center. The egg should take about 5 minutes to cook – the egg whites fully set with a runny yolk. See my Expert Tips section for tips on how to get the perfect crispy fried eggs.

Step 3: Heat the tortilla. Add cooking spray or oil to another pan over medium-high heat. Place the tortilla in the hot pan. Cook for 1-2 minutes on each side until golden brown. You could alternatively heat over an open flame on a gas stove or just in the microwave.

Step 4: Assemble egg and feta cheese tacos. To the warmed tortilla add a spread of avocado. Then place the crispy fried feta egg on top. Add salt, black pepper, and fresh chives.

Step 5: Serve and enjoy!

Recipe Variations & Topping Ideas

These viral feta eggs served on flour tortillas took the internet by storm for good reason! They are dang delicious. Absolutely perfect as is, in my opinion! But as always there is room for substitutions or additions to make this recipe meet your personal preferences and tastes. There is also tons of room to customize when it comes to the toppings!

  • Tortilla: The first thing I would change about this recipe, if I so desired, would be the carb source. The star of this show are the crispy feta eggs themselves. They will still shine no matter what they are served upon. You could swap out the tortilla with whole grain toast, pita bread, or a bagel. Breakfast potatoes or hash browns would be a delight too!
  • Avocado: Swap out the smear of avocado with cream cheese, goat cheese, or even cottage cheese. Because the more cheese the better! You could also try some flavorful basil pesto.
  • Veggies: If you want to up the nutrition in this savory breakfast there are a few things you could do! Add some baby spinach to the nonstick pan when the egg is frying up. You could also add diced tomatoes or pico de gallo to the taco when serving. Sun-dried tomatoes would be delicious too!
  • Toppings: My favorite toppings here are very simple. Just salt, black pepper, and fresh chives. But here are some additional tasty ideas:
    • Red pepper flakes
    • Fresh herbs – Fresh cilantro, fresh dil, fresh parsley
    • Hot sauce
    • Chili oil – Add on top or add to the fried eggs when they are cooking
    • Pickled onion or red onion

Expert Tips

Nonstick pan! Using a nonstick pan for this recipe is not just a tip, it is a requirement. The feta cheese will simply be a burnt mess if you use any other type of pan.

Grease the pan! I do not think greasing the pan is absolutely necessary, but I do find that it helps achieve that golden brown crispy feta crust and prevent the egg from sticking. I like to use a cooking spray of sorts! But I think olive oil, avocado oil, or butter would all work.

Lower the heat if need! If you see the cheese is starting to burn but the egg is not cooked to your liking yet, simply lower the heat.

Cover pan! Similarly to the tip above, covering the pan is a great option if you find that your egg is not cooking as fast as the feta is crisping. This will speed up the process. Covering the pan is also key if you are looking for a more fully cooked yolk.

Don’t add to a super hot pan! While I recommend adding the feta cheese to a pan that is slightly hot, I do not recommend adding to a very very hot pan. The feta will just melt, bubble, and crisp too quickly. There will be no time for the egg to cook.

Use high quality feta! As with any recipe, the quality of your ingredients will greatly influence the taste of the finished product. Especially when such simple ingredients are required, which is the case here.

FAQs

Can I use a different cheese?

Yes! I think parmesan cheese would make a fabulous alternative. You could also try a shredded cheddar.

What is the best pan to use?

The best pan to use for these crispy feta cheese eggs is a small nonstick pan. If you do not use a nonstick pan it is very likely that the cheese will stick, burn, or just become a mess as it melts.

Are feta eggs healthy?

I am not a dietician or nutritionist, but in my opinion yes! I think they are a great breakfast option.

Eggs themselves are considered nature’s multivitamin. They contain around 70 calories and 6 grams of protein. Eggs are also a good source of vitamins A & D, choline, and healthy fats.

You can add extra complex carbohydrates and fiber to this morning meal as well if you choose to serve the feta cheese eggs on top of whole grain toast with avocado. The tortilla is a fine option, but it won’t add quite as many nutrients to your breakfast!

Pair one of the tacos with fresh berries and chicken breakfast sausage and you have an even more well rounded, satisfying meal!
