Ingredients & Substitutions

This fabulous finger food is made with a handful of simple ingredients! You’ll need deli meat and cheese, rich crescent rolls, and a handful of pantry staples.

Here’s the specifics:

  • Crescent Rolls: These ham and cheese crescents require 1 can of crescent rolls first and foremost. Classic, buttery, rich, and delicious original crescent rolls!
  • Ham: Next up is 16 slices of deli ham! You can use whichever kind you’d like. My personal favorite is black forest ham.
  • Cheese: And what goes better with ham than cheese? Nothing! You’ll need 8 slices of cheese. Again, you can use whichever type you’d like – perhaps pepper jack cheese, American cheese, or Swiss cheese. I use cheddar cheese and I think it works fabulously!
  • Honey: These easy ham and cheese sandwiches are completed with a sweet and simple homemade honey mustard. You’ll need 1 tsp of the golden sweetener.
  • Dijon Mustard: The other component of that aforementioned condiment is dijon mustard. Add 1 tbsp of the flavorful spread.
  • Butter: A seasoned melted butter is spread on these crescent roll-ups before baking. It’s the perfect tasty finishing touch! 2 tbsp is the perfect amount.
  • Seasonings: The butter is combined with 1/2 tsp garlic powder, 1/2 tsp Italian seasoning, and 1/4 tsp onion powder. It is a wonderful combination!

Now let’s get baking! You need a plate of these hot ham and cheese rollups ASAP.

How To Make This Recipe

Ham and cheese crescent rolls are super simple to make! They are the perfect quick dinner or easy appetizer.

Step 1: Heat oven. Set the oven to 375 degrees.

Step 2: Make honey mustard. Add the dijon mustard and honey to a small bowl.  Combine and set aside.

Step 3: Prepare crescent dough. Next unroll the crescent dough and separate it into the 8 crescent roll triangles.

Step 4: Layer ham and cheese. Take a triangle of dough and spread it out until there is one clear wide end and it is shaped like an isosceles triangle.  Add a bit of the honey mustard mixture to the dough and spread evenly. Place one half of a cheddar cheese slice at the long end of the triangle.  Place the ham slices on top of the cheese and then add the remaining half of cheese on top of the ham. Repeat for the remaining roll-ups.

Step 5: Roll the dough. Carefully roll up the dough.  Start at the wide end and roll towards the top of the triangle.

Step 6: Combine butter and seasonings. Add the melted butter, Italian seasoning, garlic powder, and onion powder to a small bowl.  Combine thoroughly.

Step 7: Spread butter on the roll-ups. Transfer the ham and cheese roll-ups to a parchment paper lined baking sheet.  Spread the garlic butter mixture on top of each roll.

Step 8: Bake. Bake for 20-30 minutes, until golden brown.

Step 9: Serve and enjoy! Remove the roll-ups from the oven and let sit for a few minutes. Then dig in!

Optional Variations

Delicious ham and cheddar cheese crescent rolls are super customizable! They have three main components – ham, cheese, and crescent dough.

Plus I’ve added some other elements, a flavorful honey mustard spread and a seasoned butter topping, that are not truly necessary – but add a whole new level to this basic recipe.

Whether it’s the main three or bonus ingredients, everything is very adjustable! You can create almost any flavor combination under the sun. Here are my ideas:

  • Cheese: The cheddar cheese slices here can be replaced with different types of cheese! Like American, Swiss, pepper jack, mozzarella, provolone … anything. You could even replace the slices with shredded cheese or cheese sticks!
  • Meat: The pieces of ham can also be replaced with any deli meat of your choice. Perhaps roast beef, turkey or chicken. You could also do dried deli meat, like pepperoni or salami!
  • Condiment: The homemade honey mustard used here can be swapped out for pretty much any condiment you have in your fridge. I think barbecue sauce, mayo, ranch dressing, or even pesto would work great! Maybe use marinara tomato sauce for a slight pizza theme.
  • Make ‘Em Pinwheels: You could easily turn these rollups into ham and cheese pinwheels! Simply don’t separate the crescent roll dough into the triangles. Alternatively, use a crescent roll sheet instead. Crescent dough sheets don’t have any seams so you can use and shape them how you’d like. Layer the honey mustard, ham, and cheese and roll the crescent sheet into one big roll and then slice. Sort of like in cinnamon rolls! Add the pinwheel slices to a dish and bake for around the same time the crescent rolls require.
  • Garnish: I didn’t add too much of a garnish to these roll-ups. Only the melted butter and seasonings! I wanted to keep things quick and easy. But you could absolutely add some extras, for both a great look and great taste. I think chopped fresh herbs – like fresh parsley – would be a great addition. Or even dried herbs. Seeds would be great too, perhaps poppy seeds or sesame seeds.
  • Hot Honey: Like things hot and spicy? Replace the regular honey in this crescent roll recipe with hot honey to bring the heat.

My number one advice for switching up this recipe would just be to use your favorite cheese, your favorite meat, and your favorite condiment.

Wrap all of those up in a buttery dough and I can guarantee you won’t strike out. You’ll be hitting a home run!

Expert Tips

I want to ensure that when you guys make these cheese rolls at home they come out perfectly each and every time, so that you love them as much as I do! I can guarantee that once you nail this recipe, it will be a staple in your home.

I’ve gathered all my favorite tips and tricks to make sure that this is the case…

  • Roll these roll-ups very carefully and tightly. This is probably my number one tip! I also recommend pressing the tip of the triangle into the other side of the dough once rolled, so that the roll-ups stick together and stay closed.
  • While baking, cheese will probably ooze out of the roll-ups. It is kind of unavoidable since the cheese is not completely covered by dough, there is simply nothing to hold it in. It is okay! Just clean up the edges when the rolls are done baking. If you want to avoid the gooey cheese (even thought it’s one of my favorite parts of this recipe!), I recommend using only 1/2 a slice of cheese, rather than the two halves.
  • Serve these ham and cheese crescent rolls with a dipping sauce of your choice! Maybe melted butter, barbecue sauce, ranch, honey mustard, etc.
  • Have leftover ham from Christmas dinner or Easter brunch? This recipe is an absolutely perfect way to use it up. Just use thin slices of ham, the other listed ingredients, and proceed with the instructions.

Serving Suggestions

These easy cheesy crescent rolls can be served in countless different ways! Here are some fantastic ideas:

  • Party Appetizer: Finger foods like these crescent roll-ups are always a hit at my family’s parties, I’m sure they’d be a hit at yours too. Pair with Baked Cream Cheese Salsa Dip and Burrata Caprese Salad for a diverse and delicious pre-dinner course for your guests.
  • In The Lunch Box: These ham and cheese rolls are a smash success with kids! They’d make for a fabulous lunch box stuffer or after school snack. Serve with fruit and veggies! Or a soup or salad for an adult lunchbox.
  • Easy Weeknight Meal: This recipe is a great appetizer or game day snack, but it can double as a main course meal too. These rolls have a good amount of protein, which will help keep you and your family full and satisfied on a busy weeknight.
  • Breakfast: My sister tried these rolls and said they would make for a great breakfast and I could not agree more. Throw them in a brunch spread with Cinnamon French Toast Bites, Granola Yogurt Cups, and an Egg White Frittata. You could also meal prep these crescents! Pair them with eggs and fruit for a well-rounded breakfast throughout the week.

FAQs

What are crescent rolls?

Crescent rolls are flakey, crescent-shaped rolls! They have a similar moon-like shape to that of croissants.

However, their texture is more similar to that of puff pastry. Crescent rolls use the same technique of laminating that puff pastry does, though with much fewer layers.

Crescent dough also uses yeast while puff pastry does not use it, or any leavening agent for that matter.

Why does the cheese leak out of my crescent roll-ups?

Cheese will inevitably leak out of these crescent rolls, since the cheese is not completely covered with dough. Thus there is nothing to hold the cheese in!

Do not worry though, leaky cheese is no problem. You can simply cut any excess off once the rolls are done baking and before you serve them.

Plus who doesn’t love some ooey-gooey melty cheese? I know I do!

How to best store this recipe?

You can store this recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator for about 3-4 days.

You can reheat roll-ups in the microwave, oven, or air fryer until warmed through.
