Healthy French Onion Dip
I am not embarrassed to say that I have a deep love for french onion dip. Like I mean deep!! It is 100% my family’s favorite snack to serve at any gathering or holiday. It is also my friends and I’s go-to Seven Eleven snack. With some ruffles of course! But I am well aware that it is unfortunately not the best thing in the world for me. So as I do, I created a better-for-you Healthy French Onion Dip. It’s loaded with flavor, made with much better ingredients than the store bought stuff, and you know … doesn’t come straight from a can!
Healthy French Onion Dip is creamy, savory, delicious, and loaded with all the flavor of the classic! It’s made with caramelized onion, greek yogurt, whipped cream cheese, and fresh herbs. Serve this homemade dip with potato chips or veggies for the perfect game day snack or party appetizer!
Ingredients needed for Healthy French Onion Dip…
You’ll only need a few simple ingredients to make homemade Healthy French Onion Dip!
- Onions: This Healthy French Onion Dip is made with homemade caramelized onions! You will need 3 large sweet onions sliced very thinly.
- Whipped Cream Cheese: Whipped cream cheese is the base of this dip. It adds great flavor and creates such a creamy dip. Add 1 cup!
- Greek Yogurt: This dip is also made with plain greek yogurt. Greek yogurt is a healthier alternative to sour cream that still provides that tangy taste. 1/2 cup is the perfect amount!
- Worcestershire Sauce: 1 tsp of Worcestershire sauce adds a strong savory, umami flavor to this dip.
- Butter & Olive Oil: You will need 1 tbsp each of butter and olive oil to caramelize the onions in this recipe.
- Garlic: 3 cloves of garlic adds more delicious flavor.
- Salt & Pepper: Add salt & pepper to taste in this recipe. I recommend a generous amount!
- Fresh Chives: Fresh chives are optional, but they add some freshness and a beautiful look. So good!
How to make Caramelized Onion Dip…
This onion dip is actually very easy & simple to make! It only requires a littttle more effort than opening a jar of Lay’s.
- Start by thinly slicing the onions and mincing the garlic.
- Add the onions, butter, and olive oil to a large pan on the stove over medium heat. Sauté for about 5 minutes until they start to shrink down a bit. Add salt & pepper and sauté for another 10 minutes.
- Then add in the Worcestershire sauce, garlic, and more salt & pepper. Sauté for another 10-15 minutes, adding some water if needed.
- Remove the caramelized onions from the heat and let cool completely.
- Once cool add the onions to a mixing bowl with the greek yogurt, cream cheese, and more salt & pepper. Combine evenly.
- Place the dip in the refrigerator to chill for at least 1 hour before serving.
- Top with fresh chives & enjoy!
Caramelizing onion tips…
Follow the tips below for perfect caramelized onions each and every time!
- Low & slow: Use a low heat and take your time to caramelize the onions. It should take 30-40 minutes!
- Slice thinly: Make sure to slice you onions very thinly, you don’t want to get a scoop of dip with large onion chunks.
- Use butter & olive oil: I love the flavor that using the two combined gives, it’s so rich & delicious!
- Add water if needed: If your onions start to stick or look like their burning a bit add in some water. This helps them cook and also deglazes the pan to get all the delicious flavors!
- Watch for burning: Keep a close eye on your onions and stir often to ensure they do not burn.
- Salt & pepper: Add salt and pepper throughout the process for lots of flavor!
How to serve Healthy French Onion Dip…
Serve this french onion dip with potato chips of course! They are the most obvious and delicious answer, but pretzels and veggies work perfectly too. Honestly, anything you use as a vessel for dipping into this creamy dip will be absolutely scrumptious.
As for the dip itself … I love to garnish with fresh chives, or the herb of your choice, ground pepper, and dried onion or garlic. Delicious!
Storing Homemade French Onion Dip…
This dip can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will last for about 1 week!
