Ingredients

This healthy pasta sauce is made with only a handful of simple ingredients!

Fresh herbs, garlic, and pantry staples come together to make the perfect addition to pasta night.

Ingredient Notes

  • Crushed Tomatoes: The key ingredient in this simple recipe is of course canned tomatoes! I like to use the Tuttorosso San Marzano Style Hand Crushed Tomatoes with Basil & Sea Salt, but any 2 28 oz cans of crushed tomatoes will work.
  • Olive Oil: A little olive oil helps adds a great taste to this sauce! Make sure to use 3 tbsp of a high quality extra virgin olive oil for the best results.
  • Fresh Garlic: 6-8 garlic cloves make for quite the flavorful sauce here! If you are a garlic super fan, feel free to add in even more.
  • Italian Seasoning: Italian seasoning gives this healthy spaghetti sauce extra flavor and the traditional pasta sauce taste! 2 tsp is all you need.
  • Fresh Basil: I absolutely love the addition of fresh basil in this sauce! It takes the recipe up a couple notches and helps liven up the pantry staples. Use 2 tbsp … or more!
  • White Sugar: 2 tsp white sugar enhances the natural sweetness of the tomatoes in this recipe and helps keep the acidity down.
  • Salt & Pepper: Lastly, add salt and pepper to taste.

Expert Tips

Make sure to use high quality ingredients for the best tasting sauce. As the recipe requires quite minimal ingredients, you need to ensure they are all the best they can be.

If you don’t use the basil & sea salt flavored crushed tomatoes, simply add more fresh or dried basil and salt. It will not be a big deal!

Spice up the sauce! Feel free to add whatever additional seasonings and spices you’d like to this tomato sauce. I think garlic powder, red chili flakes, dried basil, and dried oregano would all be great options.

Use fresh herbs! Since this simple sauce is made with mainly pantry ingredients, they really help to liven and brighten up the dish.

If you want a smooth sauce, use an immersion blender.
