Easy, Flavorful, & Light Weeknight Dinner

I have always loved to order seafood dishes when I am out to eat at a restaurant. They’re some of my favorite!

But I was always a bit hesitant to make seafood at home. And I literally could not tell you why!

I’ve been experimenting quite a bit in that department recently, and let me tell you … sometimes it comes out even more delicious in my own kitchen than from the restaurant. I mean, hello Pesto Butter Salmon!

And now Baked Oreganata Style Shrimp too!

Made with fresh shrimp, panko breadcrumbs, fresh oregano and parsley, parmesan cheese, and lemon … this dish is bright, citrusy, flavorful, and so delicious.

This baked version of the Italian American classic dish is quick, easy, and simple. Ready in under 30 minutes, it is truly perfect for a busy weeknight dinner!

Ingredients

This seafood dish requires all simple and delicious ingredients!

Fresh shrimp, fresh herbs, parmesan cheese, lemon, and some pantry staples come together to make a light dinner loaded with Italian flavors!

Ingredient Notes

  • Shrimp: This recipe calls for 1 lb fresh shrimp. I recommend you buy already shelled, cleaned, and deveined shrimp from the grocery store or market. Total life saver!
  • Breadcrumbs: They key ingredient in any oreganata dish is breadcrumbs. My preferred type is always Panko so that is what I used here! Add 1/2 cup.
  • Butter: You’ll use 2 tbsp unsalted butter to sauté the minced garlic cloves. Nothing beats the rich flavor it provides!
  • Olive Oil: You’ll also need extra virgin olive oil. Just 1 tbsp to drizzle on top for a little extra oomph!
  • Parmesan Cheese: Parmesan cheese is not always included in an oreganata dish, but I think it pairs wonderfully with all the other flavors so it is a must for me. All you need is 2 tbsp grated parmesan.
  • Lemon: Fresh lemon is what brings this delicious dish over the edge! It adds such bright, light, and fresh flavor. So good!
  • Garlic: Add 1 1/2 tbsp freshly minced garlic to this shrimp recipe. Or more if you’d like!
  • Fresh Herbs: I absolutely love the addition of fresh herbs here. They add such great flavor! Use 1 1/2 tbsp chopped fresh oregano and 1 tbsp chopped fresh parsley. I also recommend using some for a beautiful garnish at the end.
  • Salt & Pepper: All you need in terms of seasonings here is 1/2 tsp salt and 1/4 tsp black pepper.

Substitutions & Additions

There are a few substitutions and additions you could make to this recipe for it to meet your personal preferences or tastes!

Breadcrumbs: This recipe calls for plain panko bread crumbs, but regular breadcrumbs would also work just fine!

Cheese: Parmesan cheese can be replaced with pecorino romano cheese in this recipe. They have a very similar flavor!

Seasonings: This shrimp dish gets ton of flavor from the fresh garlic, herbs, and lemon so I kept the seasonings simple with just salt and pepper. But feel free to add more! Red pepper flakes, dry oregano, dried parsley, or garlic powder would all be a great addition.

Lemon: Lemon is already an ingredient here, but I totally recommend even adding more. Serve the dish with lots of fresh lemon juice and even some lemon zest on top! It just adds such bright and fresh flavor.

Step 9: Serve the shrimp with an extra squeeze of fresh lemon juice.  Enjoy!

Expert Tips

Buy already shelled, cleaned, and deveined shrimp at the grocery store! This is a total time saver and makes this recipe 10x easier.

Pat the shrimp dry with paper towel before adding to the dish.

Make it a bit saucier! Add some chicken broth to the pan.

Don’t overcook the shrimp. Otherwise it could get rubbery!

Broil at the end of baking for the golden brown, crispy look.

Serve with fresh lemon wedges! It really adds a pop of flavor and completes the dish.

Use jumbo shrimp if you’d like!

You could prepare this recipe on a baking sheet rather than a large baking dish if you’d like! With this method the shrimp would be more spread out in a single layer. You could give each shrimp a bit more attention and add a dedicated spoonful of breadcrumb mixture to each one!

Frequently Asked Questions

What does oreganata mean?

Oreganata is a classic Italian American dish! It refers to a combination of breadcrumbs, olive oil, garlic, and oregano usually served on top of a seafood.

Lemon and parmesan are typical additions too!

You can find shrimp oreganata, clams oreganata, flounder oreganata, and more on the menu at almost any Italian restaurant.

Can I use frozen shrimp in this recipe?

Yes! Simply thaw the shrimp and follow the recipe exactly as if you were using fresh shrimp.

How to best store this recipe?

This recipe can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep best for 3-5 days!

Can I reheat this recipe?

Yes, you can reheat this recipe. However, I prefer to eat any leftovers cold. Simply because that I find that sometimes when reheated shrimp becomes rubbery.

I also think it tastes just as delicious cold!

But if you would like to reheat I would recommend popping a serving back in the oven until just warmed through. I recommend covering with foil and using a low heat (300F) to prevent overcooking!
