I am a major fan of and a firm believer in cake for breakfast. Especially if that cake is chocolate cake! Which is pretty much exactly what Healthy Chocolate Banana Bread is! A decadently delicious chocolate treat that is good enough for you to be enjoyed as your morning meal. Now that is a dream come true!

Healthy Chocolate Banana Bread is deliciously soft, moist, and even fudgy. The wholesome ingredients used in this easy recipe – like oat flour, almond flour, almond butter, and coconut oil – make this one bowl chocolate treat the perfect snack or breakfast. It’s decadent, loaded with chocolate chips, and bound to be your new go-to when you’ve got ripe bananas lying around!

Ingredients needed for Gluten Free Chocolate Banana Bread…

You’ll need the following healthy & simple ingredients to make this gluten free banana bread!

  • Bananas: Can’t have banana bread without bananas! Make sure to use extra ripe ones for the best flavor. You’ll need 1 cup of mashed banana.
  • Almond Butter: You guys know I love nut butter in my sweet treats! I like almond butter here because of its neutral flavor and creamy texture. Add 1/4 cup!
  • Coconut Oil: Refined coconut oil adds the perfect moisture to this gluten free banana bread! Make sure to use refined coconut oil because unrefined or virgin tastes like coconuts and will make your bread taste like that too. This recipe calls for 1/4 cup.
  • Coconut Sugar: Coconut sugar is a rich & delicious refined sugar free sweetener. And it is my favorite sugar to bake with! You will need 1/2 cup for this healthy chocolate treat!
  • Almond Flour: The use of almond flour makes this banana bread completely gluten free. It also makes it perfectly soft, moist, and fluffy! You will need 2 cups.
  • Cocoa Powder: Cocoa powder for all things chocolate! Make sure to use a high quality one for the best flavor. You’ll need 1/4 cup!
  • Dairy Free Chocolate Chips: Chocolate chips make this banana bread double chocolate & double the fun! I used 1/2 cup of semi sweet dairy free mini chips here, but feel free to measure with your heart.
  • Eggs: Add 2 eggs for extra moisture and binding!
  • Vanilla Extract: 2 tsp of vanilla extract gives this healthy bread that classic taste.
  • Baking Powder: 2 tsp of baking powder helps to bake this bread to absolute perfection!
  • Salt: Add a pinch of salt to balance out the sweet. 1/4 tsp to be specific!

Your typical banana bread is made with lots of butter, all purpose flour, and white sugar. Which although absolutely delicious, makes it actually more of a cake & dessert vibe than a good breakfast or snack option.

The use of all the simple and wholesome ingredients in this Healthy Chocolate Banana Bread listed above make it completely gluten free, dairy, refined sugar free, and even paleo friendly. The ingredients used are also extremely less processed and much more minimal than those typically found in banana bread. The result is a decadent chocolate treat that is much better-for-you and is pretty perfect for breakfast!

How to make Healthy Chocolate Banana Bread from scratch…

All you need is one bowl and about 20 minutes of prep time to whip up this banana bread! Then just pop in the oven to bake & you’ll have a delicious treat on your table in no time.

  1. Set the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. Next mash about 3 bananas and measure out 1 cup.
  3. Add the mashed banana to a large mixing bowl with the almond butter, melted coconut oil, coconut sugar, eggs, and vanilla extract.  Mix until smooth.
  4. Then add in the dry ingredients – almond flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt.  Combine evenly.
  5. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  6. Next transfer the batter to a greased or parchment paper lined loaf tin.
  7. Bake for 50 minutes.
  8. Remove from the oven, let cool, and cut into slices.
  9. Enjoy!

Perfect Double Chocolate Banana Bread tips…

Follow the tips below for the perfect chocolate banana bread each and every time!

  • Let cool! Make sure to let your banana bread cool before removing it from the pan and cutting into slices. This bread sets as it cools, so if you cut it too soon you run the risk of it falling apart. Better to be safe than sorry!
  • Measure your banana! Since bananas vary in size, I like to give an actual measured amount of mashed banana for my treats. For example, I measured out 1 cup of banana in this recipe which was a little less than 3 bananas. But if I just said 3 bananas, everyone would have a different amount … some exactly 1 cup, some a little less, and some a little more. And since baking is a science these small differences could change your treat entirely! So long story short, measure your banana.
  • High quality cocoa! Make sure to use high quality cocoa powder in this chocolate banana bread. This will result in the best & richest flavor.
  • Use ripe bananas! I always use super ripe bananas in any of my banana treats. They make for the strongest and sweetest banana taste, which is of course what you want!

Storing Gluten Free Chocolate Banana Bread…

You can store this gluten free chocolate banana bread in an airtight container at room temperature for about 3 days. Since this bread is deliciously moist, I do recommend you move this treat to the refrigerator to store for any longer than that. This bread will keep for about 1-2 weeks there!

For even longer storage, stash this banana bread in your freezer. It will stay for 1-2 months and you can simply pop a chocolate slice in the microwave whenever your sweet tooth kicks in!

Can I make this banana loaf recipe into muffins?

Yes, totally! This chocolate banana loaf can easily be made into muffins.

If you do make this recipe into muffins it should make about 12 and you will probably need to bake for about 20 minutes instead of the 50 minutes needed for a loaf.

  1. SOOOOO yummy!!! I made these last night and used peanut butter instead (someone in my house is allergic to almonds) and it turned out so well! Delicious! I will definitely be making it again.
