Ingredients & Substitutions

This delicious savory bowl requires just a few simple ingredients! I think it strikes the perfect balance of pantry staples and fresh ingredients too. Here’s what you’ll need to grab:

  • Tuna: I use canned white albacore tuna stored in water for this simple meal. You could also do the tuna that is stored in olive oil! Either way canned tuna is such a protein powerhouse … loading this recipe with almost 30 grams of protein per serving.
  • Jasmine Rice: Cooked rice is the tasty base to these bowls. I love to use Success Boil-in-Bag Jasmine Rice … it is so easy to prepare and comes out wonderfully fluffy each and every time in just 10 minutes.
  • Mayo: I just use regular mayonnaise here, but for extra flavor you could swap in kewpie mayo or Japanese mayo. Either option will give this tuna mixture the creamy richness we’re looking for!
  • Sriracha: A bit of sriracha sauce is what gives these tuna-rice bowls their spicy kick. Add however much or however little of it you’d like!
  • Sesame Oil: I love to mix in a bit of sesame oil to the tuna here for a more authentic flavor. This is a bit of a niche ingredient to have on hand, but once you’ve got it you can make tons of other recipes. Like Beef with Garlic Sauce, Ground Turkey Teriyaki Bowls, or Raw Carrot Salad!
  • Soy Sauce: Soy sauce adds some umami yumminess here!
  • Toppings: The toppings might just be the best part of this bowl. So customizable! My favorite ingredients to add are nutritious edamame, seaweed sheets, crunchy sesame seeds, and fresh cucumber.

Recipe Variations & Topping Ideas

I love rice bowls like this because there is so much room to customize them! You add the base of rice and the protein source and then the toppings are pretty much all up to you. There is also room for customization in the two staples – tuna and rice. Here are my ideas:

  • Rice: I used Success Boil-in-Bag Jasmine Rice for my tuna mayo rice bowl. I love the unique flavor of this sweetly, aromatic rice! But you could swap in any type of rice – brown rice, white rice, basmati rice, etc.
  • Low Carb: Don’t want the rice at all? No worries – you can swap in cauliflower rice or just extra veggies for a low carb option. Then you should stop by Cottage Cheese Pizza Bowl and Italian Grinder Salad for more meals with few carbs.
  • Raw Tuna: You could totally swap out the canned tuna here for fresh tuna. Just make sure to buy sushi-grade fresh fish! This would make for a delicious poke bowl.
  • Toppings:
    • Creamy avocado
    • Green onions, red onions
    • Fresh cucumber
    • Edamame
    • Seaweed sheets or flakes
    • Fresh lemon juice
    • Furikake
    • Fried egg, ramen-style soft boiled egg
    • Kimchi
    • Eel sauce, teriyaki sauce

Storing Suggestions

This tuna rice bowl is best leftover if the ingredients are stored separately. I recommend storing the tuna mixture, cooked rice, and prepared toppings in separate airtight containers. They will keep best for about 3-4 days.

FAQs

Which canned tuna should I use?

You can really use any canned tuna that you would like. However, my personal favorite is Bumble Bee Solid White Albacore Tuna in Water.

Is this tuna rice recipe healthy?

I am not a dietician or nutritionist, but in my opinion this delicious meal is a healthy option.

It will depend on the toppings you choose to add to your bowl, but this recipe has the potential to be highly nutritious. It is jam packed with protein from the tuna. Which will keep you satisfied and full for hours.

It also can be a great source of complex carbohydrates, healthy fats, and fiber if you load up on toppings like edamame, avocado, and other fresh veggies.

All in all, I think it is a well wounded and satisfying meal. Both nutritious and delicious!

Can I use this spicy tuna salad mixture in other ways?

Totally! This flavorful tuna mixture can be enjoyed a bunch of ways besides in this tuna sushi bowl style recipe.

I would suggest spreading on toast, making a sandwich, or adding to lettuce wraps. You could also eat it straight or with crackers!
