I am a chocolate lover !! Always have been and always will be. Sometimes I find it hard to make recipes, especially desserts, that don’t have chocolate in them. You will even find me throwing chocolate into almost all my breakfast recipes! What can I say? I am a true addict. So to fuel my chocolate addiction even more I decided to make these Healthy Double Chocolate Chip Cookies. I mean what is better than chocolate on top of chocolate? Not much. Except maybe some more chocolate hahaha.

These cookies are incredibly easy to make and incredibly delicious! They only require one bowl, some wholesome ingredients, and are pretty much made in about 30 minutes. They are also perfectly soft & chewy and bursting with chocolatey goodness. Oh and did I mention that these cookies are gluten, grain, dairy, and refined sugar free yet?

What you need for these Healthy Double Chocolate Chip Cookies!

  • Almond Butter: I absolutely love using nut butters as the base of my heathy cookies! I went with almond butter for this recipe because I think it goes the best with chocolate flavors. You could also use cashew butter or peanut butter, although peanut butter does not have as neutral of a flavor as the other two and will make your cookies taste like peanuts!
  • Applesauce: I also love to use applesauce! It adds a little bit of sweetness and some moisture to the cookies.
  • Egg: The egg also helps with the moisture of the cookies and of course holds them together!
  • Almond Flour: I love love love to use almond flour in my baking recipes! It provides a great texture and flavor, and is also gluten & grain free.
  • Pure Maple Syrup: For sweetness these cookies call for some pure maple syrup, one of my favorite refined sugar free options! I’m sure you could swap this with a different liquid sweetener of your choice such as honey or agave nectar, but I have not tested.
  • Coconut Sugar: These cookies also have a touch of coconut sugar. My other favorite refined sugar free option. I love coconut sugar because I think it has a similar feel & taste to brown sugar!
  • Cocoa Powder & Dairy Free Chocolate Chips: I mean these are double chocolate cookies so we of course have to have our chocolate!! I love to use dairy free chocolate chips, but you can totally use any chocolate you have on hand or enjoy!
  • Lastly a pinch of Salt and a splash of Vanilla Extract for flavor and Baking Powder for a little rise.

How to make these Healthy Double Chocolate Chip Cookies!

  1. Set the oven to 350 degrees.
  2. In a large bowl combine the almond butter, applesauce, egg, maple syrup, vanilla extract, and coconut sugar until smooth.
  3. Then add in the almond flour, cocoa powder, and salt and combine.
  4. Stir in the chocolate chips.
  5. Place in the fridge for 10 minutes to chill & set.
  6. Roll the dough into about tablespoon sized balls. The mixture will be very sticky so I recommend wetting your hands to help with this step. If you are having difficulty rolling into balls, you can simply form the dough into cookie shapes as best as you can.
  7. Place the balls on a greased or lined baking tray and flatten with your fingers. I also recommend wetting your fingers for this step.
  8. Top with more chocolate chips (optional, but highly recommended!) and a sprinkle of salt.
  9. Bake for 12 minutes.
  10. Let cool & enjoy!
