Healthy, Hearty, & Filling Breakfast Recipe

One of my favorite breakfasts ever is a warm bowl of oatmeal! There is simply nothing better.

The only problem is that regular oatmeal is pretty much straight carbs with not much protein. And the science says that protein is what keep us full and satisfied!

But do not worry, I have the perfect solution to this problem. Egg White Oatmeal!

I know it may sound crazy, but trust me here. I promise you will not be able to tell the egg whites are there at all.

All they do is add a 10 grams of protein to this oatmeal and give it a wonderfully fluffy texture and creamy consistency.

It’s pretty much a win win situation! Plus these oats are hearty, healthy, filling, and delicious. They have a sweet and simple flavor that is a fantastic base for all of your favorite toppings.

You simply have to try this recipe! It’s the perfect balanced breakfast bowl.

Ingredients

This delicious recipe is made with only a handful of simple ingredients! You probably already have most of them on hand too.

The one slightly out of the ordinary ingredient here is egg whites. For this you can use either liquid egg whites from the carton or fresh egg whites!

Ingredient Notes

  • Oats: The most important ingredient in any oatmeal recipe is oats! You’ll need 1/2 cup of old fashioned rolled oats here.
  • Almond Milk: The liquid used in this recipe is almond milk. I like to use unsweetened vanilla almond milk. Add 1 cup!
  • Egg Whites: Egg whites are the star of this oatmeal show! You will need 6 tbsp of egg whites. Which gives this hot oatmeal recipe a nice boost of protein. 10 extra grams of protein to be exact!
  • Pure Maple Syrup: 1 tbsp pure maple syrup adds just the right amount of refined sugar free sweetness to these oats.
  • Vanilla Extract: Add 1 tsp vanilla extract for that classic flavor.
  • Cinnamon: Lastly, add 1/2 tsp ground cinnamon. It adds that warm spice we all know and love!

Substitutions & Additions

There are a bunch of substitutions and additions you could make to this healthy breakfast option for it to meet your personal preferences, tastes, or needs!

Milk: My go-to milk is always unsweetened vanilla almond milk. However, you can swap in whatever milk you like! Perhaps regular dairy milk, soy milk, or oat milk.

Maple Syrup: You can replace pure maple syrup with a different liquid sweetener of your choice. Honey or agave nectar would both be a great option! You could even try light brown sugar.

Protein: Want to add extra protein to this already high-protein breakfast? Mix in a scoop of protein powder or add greek yogurt as one of your toppings.

Flavors: You could totally spice up the flavors in this bowl of oats! Add in some cocoa powder or peanut butter powder. Or maybe some fun spices like ginger or cardamom.

Toppings: The toppings are where it really gets fun! You could top this oatmeal with anything and everything under the sun.

  • Chocolate Chips
  • Almond Butter, Peanut Butter
  • Jam, Jelly
  • Chia Seeds, Flax Seeds
  • Dried Fruit, Fresh Fruit
  • Shredded Coconut

Expert Tips

Make sure to stir constantly once you add the egg whites! Otherwise they may scramble up and nobody wants that in their oatmeal.

Load up on all your favorite toppings! This oatmeal has a sweet and simple taste on its own, but things get really delicious with some tasty toppings.

Add between 4-6 tbsp egg whites! I like to add 6 tbsp to get the best boost of protein, but maybe try 4 tbsp to start with. Especially if you are a little skeptical!

Frequently Asked Questions

Is oatmeal with egg whites healthy?

I am not a dietician or nutritionist, but yes! In my opinion this breakfast recipe is super healthy.

It is loaded with complex carbohydrates from the oats and protein from the egg whites. Plus if you add fresh fruit and peanut butter as toppings, you’ll get healthy fats and fiber.

It has all the makings of a nutritious breakfast to keep you satisfied all morning!

What kind of egg whites should I use?

You can use liquid egg whites from the carton that you buy at the grocery store or egg whites from whole eggs.

I think using the liquid egg whites is much easier! It is also better for measuring out and knowing the exact amount of protein you’ll be getting.

If you use whole eggs you’ll just have to separate the whites from the egg yolk yourself. This is my favorite way to separate!

Can you taste the egg whites?

No, you cannot taste the egg whites! They have a very neutral taste and when combined with the maple syrup, vanilla, and cinnamon they are unrecognizable.

What is the texture of egg white oats?

Egg white oats are very creamy and fluffy! Egg whites simply add a nice volume to a regular bowl of oats.

How to best store this recipe?

You can store this recipe in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It will keep for 3-5 days!

To reheat simply pop in the microwave for 30-60 seconds.

Can I meal prep this recipe?

Yes, totally! You could make a bigger batch of this recipe and store in the refrigerator as directed above for the whole week.

You’ll have satisfying, filling, and healthy meals ready to go!
